Description: This presentation is a Teaching Session, number 6TS, from the 2000 Valuation Actuary Symposium, held September 14-15 in Washington, DC. Late in 1999, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners [NAIC] adopted Codification of Statutory Accounting Principles. With a targeted uniform compliance date of January 1, 2001, insurers need to focus their attention on the implementation impacts associated with codification. The instructors provide a brief introduction to codification, and discuss the impacts that codification might have on life insurance companies, including: changes in accounting treatment and their impact on surplus and risk-based capital required changes in operational policies and procedures and changes in the annual and quarterly statement reporting process. Discussion from participants is included.

Description: The Joint Risk Management Section is trying to develop better estimates of policyholder behavior in the tail [PBITT]. The mission of the PBITT working group is to examine and ultimately give guidance to actuaries on how to set policyholder assumptions in extreme scenarios. As part of its work, the PBITT working group issued its sixth survey to gather the range of assumptions actuaries use in pricing, reserving, and risk management of minimum guarantees on Variable Annuity products, such as death benefits, income benefits, withdrawal benefits and maturity benefits.
